Where Is the Market Gap?

We reviewed feedback on popular financial management apps to understand the characteristics of different user groups. Our goal was to identify which demographics are not adequately addressed by the current budget management apps available in the market.

Define the scale using concrete words:

How do we recruit interviewees from this population?

Questionaire

We first distribute questionnaires assessing self-control and motivation. Based on the scores, we identify individuals with both "low self-control" and "low motivation" for interviews.

Gaining deeper understanding of this overlooked population.

Interview

“Maybe low motivation and low self-control means they don’t need financial management at all?”

By conducting interview, we want to find our their

  • Interview goal 1: actual needs for financial management

  • Interview goal 2: and if they do have needs, the challenges they have encountering self-displinary for financial management

We first distribute questionnaires assessing self-control and motivation. Based on the scores, we identify individuals with both "low self-control" and "low motivation" for interviews.

Suprisingly,

despite their "low motivation," all eight interviewees expressed a clear need for financial management.

However,

they all hesitate to start or end up giving up on managing their finances for various reasons.

Based on the interviews, we identified and summarized three common mental models among the interviewees that hinder their financial management efforts.

Mental model

Perfectionist

Once the plan is disrupted by unexpected events, they easily become discouraged and struggle to realign it.

Immediate Result First

Motivated by immediate positive feedback but discouraged by delayed, long-term feedback.

Concrete Goal Driven

Need a tangible and practical saving goal to stay motivated.

Incorporating these shared mindsets - a user journey map for this population to identify the stages where they face the greatest challenges.

Journey mapping

How might we create a goal-oriented savings app that effectively engages individuals who lack strong motivation and self-discipline, helping them set realistic financial goals, stay committed, and build better saving habits through personalized guidance and rewards?

Ideation

Okay, but how exactly does the mascot accomplish these HMWs?

Incorporating the mascot concept can address the biggest challenges users face in their journey.

Design is never perfect:
continuous user testing and iteration are the keys to success.

Balancing Seriousness and Fun in UI Design

As a financial app, the UI must avoid being overly playful to ensure users perceive saving as a meaningful, money-related activity. At the same time, it should steer clear of being too dull, as the app’s core goal is to make saving an engaging and motivating experience.

Gentle Reminders for Goals Needing Attention

To avoid causing anxiety while drawing attention to goals that need saving, traditional red is replaced with an accent color like orange. Orange is less alarming, visually distinct from green (completed goals), and as an accent color, it naturally captures the user’s focus without overwhelming them.
